“Madrigal” at the Michele Mercaldo Studio in Boston

Madrigal, a solo exhibition of constructed drawings by Imi Hwangbo, will be on view at the Michele Mercaldo Studio in Boston, Massachusetts from January to February 2017.

Hwangbo’s constructed drawings are fabricated with translucent mylar that is colored, cut, and layered to create sculptural reliefs. The imagery is based on the decorative patters of Italian cathedrals and Korean Buddhist temples. With color schemes from Renaissance painting, these artworks incorporate patterns of line that appear to be drawn in space and cast a delicate shadow. This series, which is hand-colored, recalls the luminous effect of stained glass.  The Michele Mercaldo Studio is a distinguished gallery that exhibits contemporary jewelry design and fine art in Boston’s historic South End.
