“The Oracle Series," a new series of constructed drawings by Imi Hwangbo, has been acquired by the Zakim Center for Integrative Therapies at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.  In this series of three-dimensional drawings, the artist has combined floral and geometric patterns with a field of brilliant color. Silhouetted by a palette of blues and reds, the patterns create a kaleidoscopic drawing that changes with the viewer's position. “The Oracle Series”, a new exhibition of constructed drawings by Imi Hwangbo, will be shown at the Miller Yezerski Gallery in Boston from September 9-October 11, 2016. Imi Hwangbo's delicate reliefs carve two dimensional patterns, creating lines with edges, and shapes with negative space. Trained as a sculptor, Hwangbo's practice combines image, object, and material. Her work recalls the traditional Korean art of pojagi: four-cornered wrapping cloths embroidered with patterns which reference Korean folk beliefs. Hwangbo's patterns begin as hand-drawn shapes, which she interprets with cut paper and mylar. Imi Hwangbo received her MFA from Stanford University, and has been a resident at Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, the American Academy in Rome, and the Carmargo Foundation in France, among many others. She lives and works in Athens, Georgia, where she is Associate Professor at my alma mater, the University of Georgia. She currently has a show at Pavel Zoubok Gallery on West 26th street. Madrigal, a solo exhibition of constructed drawings by Imi Hwangbo, will be on view at the Michele Mercaldo Studio in Boston, Massachusetts from January to February 2017. Hwangbo’s constructed drawings are fabricated with translucent mylar that is colored, cut, and layered to create sculptural reliefs. The imagery is based on the decorative patters of Italian cathedrals and Korean Buddhist temples. With color schemes from Renaissance painting, these artworks incorporate patterns of line that appear to be drawn in space and cast a delicate shadow.
